Detecting Username Already Taken on Server Side

How would I be able to detect whether or not a username has already been taken in my custom login extension, then output a message on the client?

There isn't a way to detect the error from the Extension because the check is done before control is passed to the Extension code.
However you can customize any error message, including that one.
