Wow, it's the thread I've been looking for all morning. :P

Nice. You should put a link to this on the Products page.

Sorry Lapo, but do they have a plan for SmartFoxServer Pro or just Basic?

SFS hosting for startups?

Postby mariana » 25 Jun 2008, 16:35

I'm looking for hosting services for a (very) new SFS multiplayer game, (meaning it'll have very few users), during the time I'm looking for funding (meaning I have very little money).

The only SFS host I found is IsoInteractive ShockwaveServer, costing about $100/month, which for me at this time is a lot of money.... for now, my game is served from a crummy laptop on my desk, for $0/month, but that is not too dependable.

do you know of any company that hosts startups for a very small fee in the hope that when they get enough users they will be repaid for their generosity?

Thanks,

Mariana

Search for a VPS hosting plan (virtual private server) with 512Mb of ram available.
There are many options out there at very reasonable prices... (in the range of 20-30 $ per month or so)

VPS Hosts

Postby Barnabas » 10 Sep 2008, 18:10

I've done some serious research on VPS hosting for SmartFox for the last few days. Here are the main contenders for VPS hosting with SmartFox:
  • SliceHost: $70/month
  • GoGrid: $99/month
  • Joyent: $125/month + $125 setup, less if you sign up for a year
  • Amazon EC2 (not practical)

For our project, we went with Joyent because their machine performance blows the others away, the run on OpenSolaris (as in, Java masters, which is good for SmartFox) and that $125 includes 10 TB of bandwidth, which is 50x what GoGrid includes and 25x what SliceHost includes.

Why did you conclude that Amazon isn't practical? (If you don't mind sharing.)

Amazon EC2

Postby Barnabas » 11 Sep 2008, 02:53

Until very recently, Amazon did not provide for persistent storage. That is to say, your virtual server didn't have a permanent hard drive; once the machine is turned off, your data is gone. This makes it difficult to host databases, for example.

Last month Amazon introduced a new storage service called Elastic Block Store which is kind of like a persistent hard drive you can mount after the fact, like S3 but more hard drive-ish. It's so new it wasn't really part of the equation at the time.

Amazon does not yet offer hardware load balancing, something we needed for the web hosting side of things.

One one hand, it's attractive to only use the resources you're going to need per hour. You could save some money by spinning up more nodes for a cluster only during your peak times. In reality, that setup is amazingly hard to configure and monitor. I would consider using EC2 for offline batch processing of lots of data, like transcoding videos. I would hesitate to recommend it to a client for hosting a critical service, even "just" a game.

Finally, Amazon is so different from the other VPS web hosting services I mentioned that migrating away from them would have involved more effort, so there is the "vendor lock in" concern also.

We're going to give EC2 a try, but my game isn't launching for quite some time (8+ months). Maybe Amazon will have improved things a bit for game hosting by then.

Thank you for the info, Barnabas! :)

Hello,

We are currently evaulating the hosting solutions.

Would you please give your opinions about your selection Joyent?
Are you happy with it?
How many users can it handle?
1 GB ram is enough?
It says 1/4 core is always available, burst 8 cores. So, isnt 1/4 core a limiting factor?

Did you consider also
