Not sure that it's relevant/helpful, but I'll add that we're not using the Java Client API in the context of an Android simulator, or device.
Maybe the client Login API makes use of some different encryption library in that context?
I'll check it out.

Why
The existing client api hashes the password and salts the hash with some unknown piece of data from the session. I want to control how the password is hashed before it is sent to my SFS extension LOGIN_EVENT handler.
